From the pen of Bishop J.C. Ryle (1817-1900) (from his book: "Holiness"). Comments added.
5)."A holy man will follow after temperance and self-denial. He will labor to mortify ( put to death) the desires of his body---to crucify his flesh with its affections and lusts (i.e; strong desires), to curb his passions, to restrain his carnal inclinations---lest at any time they break loose. Oh, what a word is that of the Lord Jesus to the Apostles, 'Take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting and drunkenness, and cares of this life' (Luke 21:34); and that of the Apostle Paul, 'I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection, lest that by any means when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway'" (i.e; disapproved) (I Corinthians 9:27). (Excerpted from "Power for Living" 2/28/10).
Comments: I'm reminded again, by these thoughts, how urgent it is that we run our thoughts and not let them "run" us. May I suggest that you scroll back to "Matters of the Mind" and read these few articles over again in the light of the above?
Selah! We will either be prisoners of our thoughts or we will make our thoughts our prisoners. (See II Corinthians 10:5) The first way is tyranny, the second is triumph, in His strength! Ron
Good afternoon Brother Ron. I scrolled back to March 9, and have read the articles over and over... I am starting to see a much needed picture...the Holy Spirit is showing me the way. Praise God. Knowing the Way has been a real blessing for me, Ron. Have a great day! Herb
