Anyone can understand the Bible! Is that true? Yes and no. Let's think on this. An unsaved person can understand the Bible to a point. He can understand the history of Israel. He can learn how the church came into being. He can understand that it is wrong to lie, steal, be immoral, etc. If he is sensitive to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, he can begin to discern some Spiritual Truth. If he opens himself to that Truth and yields to it, he will likely be given more Truth and as he yields to that, even more. However, when he rejects Truth, that is where his understanding ceases. He can go no further in understanding unless he changes his mind and opens himself up to believe and receive and act upon God's Truth. A saved person gains a Spiritual understanding of what the Bible is all about. However, if he neglects the Scriptures, he will just have a general understanding. (If he is genuinely saved, God will work to bring him into an ever deeper study and application of His Word). Deeper and deeper understanding and appreciation of the Bible is reserved for those who are giving themselves to faithful, prayerful and careful study. It is granted to those who, when they devotionally read and study, are attuned to listen to God as He speaks to them through the Truths on the printed pages. "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth" (II Timothy 2:15). More and more, as the child of God walks in the Light of God's Holy Word, the Holy Spirit will open up the Word to his understanding. Selah! Every reader is at one place in this journey of life. He has no understanding, some understanding, a general understanding, or an ever increasing, thrilling understanding of God's Holy Bible. Search your heart and discern where you are in the journey. Settle for nothing less than an ever deepening grasp of the Scriptures. Ron
