Tonight we went to our local mall to browse around and kill some time. As I was walking around with Tyler and Brandon...I was approached by a lady who works at a kiosk. She asked me if I had a moment. Before I could say no she proceeded to insist like a typical sales person.
Her approach was shocking to say the least. After I said no...she then asked if I believed in magic. Before I could respond she grabbed my hand and took out a file/sponge and started working on my thumbnail. I was in such disbelief all I could do was just stand there and laugh!
During her passionate sales pitch she assured me that this 30 seconds would save me tons of money and bring much happiness. When she was done she showed me her so called magic....my thumbnail was very shiny. I felt demasculinated...if that's even a word. Lol.
As I drove home I began to connect this experience with the way some approach evangelism. Some think the most effective way is through a cold sales approach that is forceful and blunt. Although some may have been won to Christ this way...many more have been turned away.
Is the good news something to coerce people to accept? What do you think is the most effective way? Please leave a comment with your thoughts.
Wow Dan, that's one shiny thumbnail alright! I think it's probably good that you stopped her at that point. (Ha,ha.)
In answer to your question, I myself think that a forceful, blunt "sales pitch" form of evangelism does just send most people running in the opposite direction. I think that a much gentler, friendly, low-key approach would work way better, even if it does take a lot longer...
