All you have to do is look up; to realize your just a speck in the universe. One of my favorite things to do is to gaze upon the stars on a clear night. The stars in the sky look so beautiful.....that you just have to wonder...who am I? And of course everything must be understood in perspective. Have you ever considered how huge the Earth is? The Earth is huge. It has a circumference of 25,000 miles around the equator. It also has a diameter of nearly 8,000 miles from east to west and north to south.
It is hard to imagine that the stars in the sky are bigger than Earth. However...once you grasp how far away these stars are.....then you begin to fathom their immensity. Once you can grasp that......Earth no longer seems big. Take a look at these pictures below to see comparisons of Earth to other objects in the universe.
Amongst our inner planets (with the exception of Pluto; whose is no longer classified as a planet) Earth is the largest. Venus is pretty similar in size but totally incapable of sustaining life. Actually, no other planet in our solar system is capable of sustaining life to our knowledge.
Jupiter is by far the largest planet in the solar system. As a matter of fact...approximately 1320 Earths could fit inside of Jupiter!!! The earth is no longer that big, eh? Check out the size of Pluto next to Jupiter!
The Sun is 93,000,000 miles away from Earth. That is a good thing. If it were any closer we would burn up! It takes the light that leaves the sun 8 minutes to travel to earth. So if the Sun would explode right now...we wouldn't know about it for another 8 minutes. Mind blowing. Jupiter, who is monstrous in size dwarfs in comparison to the Sun. Tomorrow when you notice the Sun...realize that approximately 1,000,000 Earths would fit inside the Sun.
The Sun is huge...but it also is dwarfed by other objects in the universe. Here are the stars (Sirius, Pollux and Arcturus). Sirius is the brightest star at night in the sky. If you look up at the sky, at night, you can't miss it. It's really bright. Sirius is still way bigger than the Sun. Sirius is.... get this.....8 light years away from earth. I'm being serious. No pun intended. A light year is defined as the distance and time it takes for light to move through space. The light from the Sun....takes 8 minutes...and yet Sirius takes 8 light years!!!! Pollux is every bigger and further away still (34 light years). Earth in this picture is practically invisible.
This is just mind blowing. Our Sun is so massive...and yet compared to these giant stars it's barely even there. And we can go on...and on....and on. Size is relative. So you think your a big shot.......take a look up. We live in a galaxy, in the universe, called the Milky Way. It holds all of these things that we see here in this posting. The Milky way is so huge that it would take you 100,000 light years to go from one end to the other. That is of course if you traveled at the speed of light for 100,000 years. The speed of light is 186,000 miles per second. There is nothing faster than light. Think about that. It takes 100,000 years to cross the Milky Way galaxy at that speed. Wow.
You are not a big shot. Creation tells us that.
Psalm 19 (NIV)
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
2 Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge.
3 There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. [a]
4 Their voice [b] goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun,
Today is Earth Day. Most Christians are known for their lack of enthusiam over the environment. This should not be so. I believe it is sin if you do not care about the enviornment or you are abusing it recklessly. That's right. Sin. To litter...is not just being a bad citizen of your community...it is being a bad steward of creation. The air, water, trees, grass, vegetation, and wildlife are all apart of creation. And God loves it. God is green. To abuse this beautiful creation is sin. This is not a politcal issue. To me this is a deeply spiritual issue. The earth and everything in it belong to the Lord. It's not ours. We need to take care of it as it was given to us...borrowed property.
One of the first commands given to Adam was"The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it." Genesis 2:15God told Adam to "take care of it". God had set certain rules in place from the beginning as to how all this is to go down.
After God created everything this is what it said about his reaction. "God saw all that he had made, and it was very good." Genesis 1:31 Creation is still good today. Although it has been marred by the sin curse...it's still all good.
Today or this week do something to honor God by taking care of his creation. Go down your block and pick up trash. Go plant a tree. Go buy a Hybrid vehicle. Do something. It's your duty. God is Green.
